Kayani Bakery workers threaten to go on hunger strike from tomorrow
Pune, June 13 (UNI) Trouble is brewing in the city's famous 50-year- old Kayani Bakery, known for its Shewsberry biscuits, as 50 workers today threatened to go on a hunger strike from tomorrow if their demands are not met.
Kayani Bakery is a proprietary concern having six partners with a turnover of over Rs 15 crore annually.
Addressing a news conference here today, leader of the workers union Vinod Kamble said the workers are abused by two of the proprietors. Neither they get any weekly holiday nor any other holiday despite a gruelling 12 hour schedule. Further, no medical facilities have been given and there are no documents pertaining to their work.
Around 50 workers were present at the news conference. Some of them have been working for over 20 years at the bakery. They will go on a hunger strike from tomorrow if their demands are not met soon, Mr Kamble added.
In the past, Pune was known as a retreat for pensioners and Shewsberry biscuits of Kayani Bakery.
