Chennai: Awareness prog on chikungunya launched
Chennai, June 13: The Chennai Corporation has launched a massive programme to create awareness among the people about the implications of Chikungunya.
As part of the awareness programme, organised by the Public Health Department of the Corporation, Mayor M Subramanian distributed pamphlets on chikungunya door-to-door in several houses in Saidapet area, including Hospital Road, New Colony, Alandur Road, Vinayagapuram, Jothiammal Nagar and Chetty Thottam yesterday.
Highlighting the ongoing measures being undertaken to fight the disease, Mr Subramanian said about 830 healthcare staff were involved in carrying out the awareness campaign.
The corporation had set up medical camps at Chennai Central and, Egmore railway stations besides Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus at Koyambedu to screen passengers, especially those coming from Kerala, the Mayor said.
Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni sought public cooperation to spread awareness of the virus disease.
Stating that fogging and spraying of insecticides were being done regularly in every ward, he said steps were being taken to prevent mosquito breeding in overhead tanks and underground sumps.
