Guwahati, June 13 (UNI) The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will not support the Congress presidential candidate and rather root for the re-election of President A P J Abdul Kalam.

Addressing a news conference here today, AGP President Brindabon Goswami said his party would go by the decision of the regional party's forum and a final decision would be taken at Chennai. The AGP has three MPs and 24 MLAs in the state assembly.

The AGP today tried hard to defend its late and knee-jerk reaction to most of the recent turbulence in Asom as the media pounced on them.

Mr Goswami tried to allay the allegation that his party was not functioning as the main opposition party of Asom.

''This government has failed to protect the law and order situation as well as protect the people,'' Mr Goswami said, adding that due to weak governance, immigration was still on.

He was announcing the decision of the Central executive held last night. The party also decided to suspend the constituency delimitation till the completion of the National Register of Citizen.

The party also opposed the demand of Autonomous Council on the basis of religious and linguistic minority, which has already stirred honest nest in the state.

The demand was made by an MLA from the Assam United Democratic front (AUDF) and denounced by all political parties, including his own party.
