New Delhi, June 12 (UNI) The heatwave sweeping Delhi during the past week abated today with the Easterly winds bringing down the mercury to 37.2 Degrees Celsius.

After scorching hot conditions over the past few days, a cool morning greeted Delhiites today with the Easterlies resulting in drop in the minimum temperature to 30.3 degrees Celsius, from 31.5 degrees C yesterday.

The maximum also dropped to 37.2 degrees C, from 41.1 degrees C yesterday. The maximum of 37.2 was three degrees below normal.

Though humidity levels remained at a high of 49 per cent, the drop in mercury, coupled with a cloud cover over the sky, brought some respite to the people from the heatwave that has been sweeping the Capital since the beginning of June.

Weathermen attribute the sudden coolness in the air to the change in wind pattern from Westerly to Easterly direction over plains in Northwest India.

The coming days could bring more relief from the scorching heat with the weather office forecasting a further fall in day temperatures over Northwest India under influence of Easterlies and the possibility of thunderstorms during the next few days.

''Current meteorological analysis suggests a further fall in day temperatures over Northwest India and Rajasthan owing to the prevalence of Easterly winds and likely occurrence of scattered thunderstorm activity during the next 2-3 days,''the weather office said.

They have also forecast rainfall in Delhi and other parts of Northwest India, accompanied with isolated squall, over the next few days.

The Met office has forecast a partly cloudy sky over Delhi during the next 24 hours with the possibility of duststorms and thunderstorms towards the evening. They have also forecast a drop in the maximum temperature tomorrow to 39 degrees C.
