Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, June 12 (UNI) Tamil Nadu local administration minister M K Stalin today said the desalination plant at Kattupalli village near Minjur, proposed to wipe off the acute water scarcity in Chennai, will be commissioned on June three, 2008, marking Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's birthday.

Talking to newspersons at Poondi, he said work on the plant was in full swing.

The 100-million-litres a day (mld) capacity plant, started under public-private partnership, was expected to augment water supply to the city. A Hyderabad-based organisation, IVRCL Infrastructure and Projects Limited, and its technical partner Befesa Construction Tecnologia Ambiental, Spain, were involved in the construction of the plant on a DBOOT (Design, Build, Own, Operate and Transfer) basis.

Metrowater would be involved in the distribution of water from the plant. About 237 mld of seawater would be used to generate 100 mld of drinking water. The remaining quantity would be discharged into the sea.

Mr Stalin was here along with PWD Minister Duraimurugan to inspect the repair works on the Poondi-Kandaleru canal, bringing river Krishna waters to the State. The repair work from zero point, the Tamil Nadu border, was being undertaken by the construction major Larsen and Toubro.
