Ludhiana, June 12 (UNI) A local court today granted bail to Delhi based businessman Chetan Gupta in the multi crore Ludhiana City Center scam.

While granting bail to Gupta, Additional District and Session Judge Gurbir Singh directed him to furnish a sureity bond of Rs 20 lakh and also to surrender his passport.

Gupta, a close friend of former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who was arrested by the state Vigilance Bureau from Delhi last month, was released after spending about 20 days in police and judicial custody.

The Vigilance Bureau had filed a case in the scam against Capt Singh, former minister Choudhary Jagjit Singh and 16 others at Ludhiana after the SAD-BJP government came to power in the state.

The case was filed after the Bureau had conducted an inquiry into the scam and had concluded that crores exchanged hands during the previous Congress rule while awarding the contract for construction of the City Center to Delhi based Today Homes and Infrastructure, causing a heavy loss to the Ludhiana Improvement Trust.

After the interrogation of Gupta, the Bureau had claimed that it had vital information to nail Capt Singh and his family members and also his former media advisor B I S Chahal. Capt Singh, Chahal and Raninder Singh, son of the former chief minister and Choudhary Jagjit Singh have already been questioned by the Bureau in the City Center case.

Chahal was arrested on Sunday last by the Punjab Police in a land grabbing case alongwith six of his relatives. He is currently behind bars at the Sadar police station here.

Today Homes began the construction of the City Center, Asia's biggest commercial and housing project last year under the guidance of the Ludhiana Improvement Trust.
