Tripura: 3 injured, normal life affected due to heavy rain

Agartala, Jun 11: About three people, including two children, sustained serious injuries following collapse of a wall here yesterday due to intense monsoon showers and thunder storms.

Police here today said that one Ashis Dey and two of his children were seriously injured when a boundary wall in the residential area of West Agartala collapsed and hit Mr Dey's house yesterday.

Meanwhile, about 200 families, residing in the low-lying areas of South Tripura, took shelter in refugee camps last night, official souraes said.

Official reports said water level in all southern rivers had increased and submerged the low-lying bank areas. Consequently, the civil administration pressed boats into service in a few locations of South Tripura distirict.

According to the Met Department, Southwest Monsoons hit Tripura on June nine, causing heavy showers across the state in the past 24 hours and it would continue at least for another 24 hours.

All major roads in Agartala were water-logged within three hours, while vehicular traffic and power supply were badly affected in the state.

Meteorologists said the Southwest Monsoons had advanced northwest of the Bay of Bengal, covering entire sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, including some parts of Bihar.

Conditions were favourable for the advancement of southwest monsoons into some more parts of Bihar, some parts of Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal during the next 24 hours, Met sources stated.

The National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting(NCMRWF) stated that scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is likely over West Bengal, while isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Northeastern states and scattered rainfall is likely over Orissa.

Presently, Southwest Monsoons were active over Tripura, Asom and Meghalaya, it stated, adding that moderate to rather heavy rain occurred at most places over Arunachal Pradesh, light to moderate rain occurred at most places with isolated rainfall over Asom and Meghalaya and light rain occurred at a few places over Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram during the past 24 hours.
