Shia-Sunni face off averted in Varanasi

Varanasi, Jun 11 (UNI) Timely action by the police averted a face off between the Shia and Sunni Muslims in the weaver dominated Doshipura locality here today.

Tension gripped the Doshipura locality under Jaitpura police station area, when members of the Shia community objected to the erection of an electric poll on a disputed land housing graveyard, police said.

Those from the Sunni community, however, tried to pressurise the electricity department personnel for erecting the poll, claiming it was not putting up on the disputed land.

Getting the information, police personnel reached the spot and prevented the matter from worsening by stopping the erection process.

Police in strength has been deployed in the area to deal with any eventuality.
