Kochi, June 11 (UNI) The Kerala High Court today granted two months' time to the Kochi Corporation to evict encroachers from the Perandoor Canal here.

The Corporation secretary appeared before a Division Bench of the Court, comprising Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice K T Sankaran, and filed an affidavit, detailing the action taken by the corporation to remove the encroachments.

The court had on June 5 directed the Corporation secretary to appear in person before the Court today to explain the reasons for the Corporation's failure to take steps to evict the encroachers on the Perandoor canal.

The Court had issued the directive following a contempt of court petition filed by the Institute of Social Welfare against the corporation.

The petitioner contended that the secretary had earlier undertaken that all encroachments on the canal would be removed but had taken little action to do so.

The Court also directed the police to render necessary assistance for evicting the encroachments.
