Agartala, Jun 11 (UNI) The National Bamboo Mission(NBM) today cautioned Northeastern states to maintain a strict vigil over certification of seeds and planting materials while setting up bamboo nurseries in the region.

Quoting the NBM memorandum, officials here said due to poor management, the bamboo production was not upto expected levels, despite favourable climate and soil nutrients.

While China produced 20 tonnes of bamboo per hectare, India's figures per hectare were a mere one - two tonnes, officials stated, adding that the demonstration of the techniques of preservation of bamboo was required for the region.

The NBM also stressed on the skill development programme on Bamboo Nursery Raising and Commercial Plantation and asked the states to deal with vegetative propagation techniques of bamboo as well as commercial plantation and its management.
