Gang circulating counterfeit currency busted

New Delhi, June 11 (UNI) Police today claimed to have busted an international gang circulating counterfeit currency in India with the arrest of two people, including a woman.

While Tabbasum Abdullah (26), a Mumbai resident, was arrested from Daryaganj on June seven, Mohammad Shamim (45), native of Chaprauli in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on June 10 from Old Delhi.

Sleuths of the Special Cell recovered counterfeit currency worth Rs five lakh in Rs 1000 denominations from Tabassum.

The trail of the counterfeit currency was traced to Pakistan and Bangladesh from where it was sent into India, police said.

Tabbasum reportedly confessed to having travelled to Pakistan in April and May 2007 where she was introduced to the pointsman in Bangladesh-- Bilal.

Bilal used to instruct her about collection and delivery of the currency.

Shamim was arrested on information provided by Tabbasum.

Further investigations are in progress.
