Puducherry, June 11 (UNI) AICC General Secretary V Narayanasamy, MP, today urged the Union Government to take steps to ensure the safety and security of Tamils in strife-torn Sri Lanka.

Addressing a press conference here, he said even though the Centre did not directly intervene in the internal matters of the island nation, it should ensure safety of the Tamils living there. He had talked to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee in this regard, he added.

Pitching for a consensus candidate for the coming Presidential election, he said despite knowing that chances of the Congress candidate was bright, the BJP was attempting to field Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekawat and there was a likelihood of a third front candidate too. Fielding a third front candidate was an act of indirectly supporting the BJP, he added.

Mr Narayanasamy asked former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to prove with adequate evidence that she had nothing to do with the Kodanadu estate in Nilgiris district of the neighbouring State, instead of organsing agitations and disrupting normal life.

Demanding that the Government take steps to avail 50 per cent seats in private medical colleges this year, he said he had talked to Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss and Puducherry Health Minister E Valsaraj to derecognise those colleges which fail to allot 50 per cent seats to the Government quota.
