AUDF demands dismissal of Tarun Gogoi govt in Asom

Guwahati, June 11 (UNI) Alleging that its partymen were being ''targeted'' by the ruling Congress, Asom United Democratic Front(AUDF) today demanded the dismissal of Tarun Gogoi government in Asom.

AUDF leaders, led by party chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal today met Governor Lt Gen Ajay Sinha in the Raj Bhawan and demanded dismissal of the state government.

Later, addressing a press conference Mr Ajmal said, ''This is unprecedented in democracy. We just wanted to hold a protest rally at Samguri. But not only were our supporters, MLAs and leaders forcibly stopped all over the state, but also in Nagaon district. We had to face attacks and you all had seen it and reported it.'' Congress workers yesterday stopped AUDF supporters from reaching Samguri in which its various leaders were injured more than a dozen cars of the AUDF supporters damaged.

''We would have only addressed a meeting, but thanks to Congress hooligans, we got ten times more coverage in the media. But this cannot be allowed to happen. In front of our eyes the district administration and the Superintendent of Police were colluding with Congress supporters to attack us,'' said AUDF vice-president HRA Choudhury.

Demanding removal of Forest Minister Rockybul Hussein, the party also sought a judicial inquiry into the matter.

''The Congress workers, in collusion with the police, openly attacked AUDF workers all over the district. How can you tolerate that? We may have difference of opinion but you can not attack us,'' Mr Ajmal said.

Tension continued till late evening in the district as Congress supporters continued to ''target'' AUDF workers and stopped vehicles in many parts of lower Asom.

''We would have gone peacefully after the meeting. This episode, which has been well recorded in the media, would be remembered as the darkest chapter in Asom's political history,'' said Jamiat Ulema-e Hind president Mahmood Madani, a special invitee to the meeting.
