Villagers oppose thermal power project

Mysore, June 10 (UNI) People of Mysore and Chamalapura village have raised their objection to the proposed 1000 MW Thermal Power Plant to be built in Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) mode at a cost of Rs 5,500 crore at Chamlapura village, about 30 km from here.

All 29 the companies, including Tata and Reliance, had evinced interest to set up the plant.

A campaign, against the plant, was organised here today by the Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICM) to create awareness about the environmental threat the project poses.

Minister for Energy H D Revanna had recently held talks in Delhi about the project, which needs 3000 acres of land and 1000 million litres of water per day.

The water was proposed to be drawn from Kabini river, about eight km from the plant site.

Former Minister M Shivanna, MLA, present at the meeting, threatened to launch Nandigram-type agitation if the state government failed to drop the project.
