Thane, June 10 (UNI) The Thane police has urged Yahoo to block objectionable material on the site ''Orkut''.

The request follows the attack on cybercafes in Kalyan by alleged Shiv Sena activists who were protesting objectionable material on the site recently.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Kalyan Anupkumar Singh told UNI that a response from Yahoo was being awaited.

The Shiv Sainiks had protested against some messages posted on Orkut which were derogatory to Shiv Sena Bal Thackeray, several other popular figures, besides the gods and godesses. The activists had wanted the local cybercafes to block the message but when their request was not heeded, they had ransacked the cafes.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister R R Patil, who was in Thane recently to participate in a police function, had assured that action would be taken against those found guilty of the Orkut controversy.

He had also assured that the Thane police would be strengthened on the lines of their Mumbai counterparts by providing three more additional commissioners of police and by recruiting over 1,000 policemen.
