Noted advocated passes away
Jabalpur, June 10 (UNI) Noted advocate Sardar Rajendra Singh passed away here today following prolonged illness.
He was 94 and is survived by his son Surendra Singh.
Mr Singh was not keeping well since a month. He breathed his last in the hospital. His last rites would be performed today.
Mr Singh completed his graduation from Robertson college in Jabalpur. After completing his graduation in law, he entered into legal profession in 1940.
He represented former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as defence counsel before the Shah Commission.
He defended the then Information and Broadcasting Minister Vidyacharan Shukl in the Supreme Court in a matter related to the Censor Board preventing broadcast of 'Kissa Kursi Ka'. Mr Shukl was acquitted in the case.
Mr Singh also served as a Rajya Sabha member. He defended Union Rail Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in Rs 1,000 fodder scam and obtained bail for him from the court.
He also argued for actor Sanjay Dutt in Mumbai blast case in special TADA court and obtained bail from him.
Mr Singh, who was also former chairman of the Madhya Pradesh High Court Advocates Association and founding member of the State Advocates' Council, was also conferred honorary doctorate by the Rani Durgawati University on its golden jubilee year.
President A P J Abdul Kalam had honoured him recognising his 50 years' of service to legal profession on the occasion of golden jubilee celebration of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Mr Singh's grandsons Jagateshwar Singh and Karaneshwar Singh are advocates in the Supreme Court.
