Hottest day of season in J

Srinagar, Jun 10 (UNI) People in Jammu and Kashmir today braved the highest temperature of this season so far with the mercury rising to scorching 46.3 degrees Celsius in the winter capital and 34.4 degrees Celsius in this city.

Weather office here said the maximum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at 34.4 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature stood at 14.9 degrees Celsius.

Heat wave prevailed in Jammu where the maximum temperature soared to 46.3 degrees Celsius while the minimum stood at 26.8 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam and other hill resorts in Kashmir also witnessed rising temperatures. In Pahalgam, the maximum stood at 30.1 degrees Celsius while the minimum was recorded at 9.5 degrees Celsius.

The all time highest temperature recorded in Kashmir was on July 15, 1973 when the mercury had shot up to 39.5 degrees Celsius.

The high temperature ever recorded in the month of June in the Kashmir valley was on June 29, 1978 when the mercury had gone up to 37.8 degrees Celsius.

On June 23, 1990, the maximum temperature in Kashmir stood at 36.0 degrees Celsius while it was recorded at 36.5 degrees Celsius on June 24, 2005.

A large number of people, mostly children, were seen taking dip in the famed Dal Lake and River Jhelum here to beat the heat.

Ice cream vendors and fruit sellers have been doing brisk business these days.

Heavy rush of people, mostly domestic tourists, was being witnessed on the banks of the Dal Lake and the Boulevard Road in the evenings these days.
