Gulbarga, June 9 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly N Dharam Singh today defended Congress President Sonia Gandhi's controversial statement on Mahadayi water issue, saying her remarks were not properly understood.

''Ms Gandhi commented on the Mahadayi water dispute during her election campaign in Goa as per the partyelection manifesto,'' he told a press conference here.

Accusing the BJP of politicising the issue, he said the saffron party did not do anything to solve the dispute in favour of Karnataka, while it was at the helm of affairs in Goa and at the Centre.

The government was trying to divert people's attention by highlighting Ms Gandhi's remark, he added.

''The government has failed on all fronts. It is trying to divert people's attention from its failures by creating much ado about the issue,'' he alleged.

Mr Singh said a high-level state Congress delegation would meet Ms Gandhi in New Delhi after she returned from her foreign tour and seek her intervention to settle the water dispute.

Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, on June 4, had announced that the BJP would file a contempt of court case against Ms Gandhi for her controversial statement on Mahadayi river while the issue of water sharing between Goa and Karnataka was pending before the Supreme Court.
