School toppers bag cash awards

Chennai, June 9 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today honoured with cash awards, seven students, who had taken Tamil as the first language and secured the first three places in the State in the tenth standard examinations, results of which was announced recently.

At a brief function at the Secretariat, he distributed cash awards and certificates, giving an undertaking that the Government would bear the higher educational expenses of the students.

State topper S Akshaya of St Mary's Girls Higher Secondary School in Chengalpattu was given a cash award of Rs 7,500, while two other students, who came second, were given Rs 6,000 each. Four students who secured the third place were given Rs 5,000 each, an official release here said.

Students and their parents, who accompanied them, thanked the Chief Minister, the release said.

School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu, Department Secretary Kutralingam and School Education Director R Kannan were present on the occasion.
