Plan to introduce city bus service in public-private partnership

Chandigarh, Jun 9 (UNI) The Punjab Local Government has chalked out a plan to introduce city bus service in Amritsar, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala in Public-Private partnership.

This was disclosed here today by Mr D S Bains, Principal Secretary (Local Government) after discussions at length with commissioners of all municipal corporations in the state.

Mr Bains asked all the commissioners to identify land for bus depots and parking areas in their respective districts. To avoid inconvenience caused to passengers, GPS satellite system would be introduced to provide information to passengers regarding the location of bus.

Mr Vikas Partap, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana informed that the corporation has identified 8.75 acres of land at Dhandari Kalan for the bus depot and there was a proposal for multi-storied parking at Feroze Gandhi Market.

Amritsar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Hussan Lal said that a land measuring 2.5 acres outside the walled city could be used for construction of the bus depot.

Patiala Municipal commissioner S K Ahluwalia said that land, measuring 2.5 to 3 acres, was available in the Kabari market for multi-storeyed parking.

Mr Bains said that Muncipal commissioners of Amritsar and Ludhiana would finalize the land before June 20 next.

It was decided in the meeting that 1.6 acres of land adjacent to Transport Nagar in Jalandhar should be used for parking and 2.5 acres of land in Beant Singh Park area, which belongs to PSIEC, could be considered for workshop after getting clearance from the Industry Department.
