Ordinance on VAT notified

Puducherry, June 9 (UNI) The Puducherry administration today notified the Ordinance, promulgated by Lt Governor Mukut Mithi on June 2, on implementing Value Added Tax (VAT) in the Union Territory, in the official gazette.

The notification had enlisted the goods exempted from VAT and the imposition of different tax rates on the commodities through various schedules.

The Ordinance had repealed the Pondicherry General Sales Tax Act, 1967.

As per the first schedule of the Ordinance, 55 items were exempted from the purview of VAT. The levy of tax range between one per cent and 35 per cent according to the lists contained in its various schedules.

The Lt Governor had promulgated the Ordinance since the Assembly was not in session.
