NABARD sponsors project on Employment Diversification

Amritsar, Jun 9 (UNI) The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has approved a research project of the Punjab School of Economics of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) regarding Employment Diversification in an Agriculturally Developed Region of India.

Nabard has granted Rs 2.73 lakh as financial assistance to the Punjab School of Economics to conduct the study on employment diversification.

Dr Paramjit Kaur Dhindsa, Professor of Punjab school of Economics has been appointed as principal investigator while Dr R S Bawa, registrar of the university, would be the co-principal investigator of this project.

Giving details about the project, Dr Bawa said the research study would explore the process which resulted in the participation of rural households in diversified economic activities especially non agricultural economic activities in rural areas.

Dr Bawa said it would also find out how regional, village and household characteristics interact to influence the process of economic diversification. The study would concentrate on the structure and nature of aternative employment in the rural areas.

He said the long term prospects of available diversified employment structure and suitability of alternate employment opportunities would also be analysed.

Dr Bawa said that under the project, it would also be attempted to find out reasons for the growing tendency of educated people to leave the farm sector and the country in spite of the large potential that existed in the non-farm sector activities in the state.

The university would submit its final report of the project to NABARD within one year, he added.
