Vadodara, Jun 9 (UNI) About 300 lawyers prevented Ranjitsinh Gaekwad. son of former Maharaja of Baroda Sayajirao Gaekwad, from removing the statue of his mother Chimanbai Gaekwad, which is situated in the central hall of the civil court.

Ranjitsinh yesterday said he wanted to shift the three foot statue, carved out of a whole white Rajasthan stone, to his Laxmivilas palace, three km away.

However, the lawyers of Vadodara Vakil Mandal (VVM) led by its president Narendra Tiwari, vice-president Chandrakumar Seth and VVM member Ashok Joshi vehemently protested the removal of the statue, saying it has been in the court premises for 111 years and will continue to remain there.

Ranjitsinh, therefore, had to beat a hasty retreat.

The land for building the court was donated by Maharaja Sayajirao.
