Insurgency on the wane in Tripura: MHA report

Agartala, June 09 (UNI) Insurgency has decreased substantially in Tripura and the rate of combating militancy is better in the NE.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) annual report 2006-07, only 87 extremist related incidents were recorded in Tripura during 2006, which were 115 in 2005.

However, the number of militancy related incidents had increased in both Asom and Nagaland in 2006, the report revealed.

In Asom, 413 incidents of militancy were reported in 2006 against 398 in 2005. The number of extremist attacks in 2006 had gone up to 309 in Nagaland, compared to 192 in 2005, the report stated.

However, Arunachal Pradesh showed a steady decrease in militancy.

Altogether 16 incidents were reported in 2006, compared to 32 in 2005.

Meanwhile, militant surrender has also shown a positive trend during the year. Altogether 1,430 ultras from different militant outfits had laid down their arms in 2006, the report said.

The report claimed that altogether 15 insurgent groups were operating in the NE region.
