Bandh observed in Noormahal
Phagwara, Jun 9 (UNI) A complete bandh was observed in Noormahal following the killing of one person and injuries to three others in police firing in the town yesterday.
Hundreds of youths held a demonstration and took out a protest march in Noormahal town. They organised a dharna near the Bus Stand at Noormahal, which was adressed by various political leaders who demanded Rs 20 Lakh compensation to the families of the deceased and arrest of the police officers responsible for the firing.
Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Ajit Singh Pannu, DIG Narinderpal Singh and SSP Arpit Shukla were camping at Noormahal to monitor the situation. The station house officer of Noormahal Shiv Dev Singh has been placed under suspension Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal visited Bahadurpur village to personally condole the death of the youth in the police firing with his family members. Hundreds of men and women attended the funeral of the youth today.
Later Mr Atwal visited a hospital at Jalandhar and met those injured in the police firing.
Police had yesterday opened fire on a mob protesting against the alleged suicide by a couple and their daughter near Bir village in Jalandhar district.
