Mumbai, June 08 (UNI) More than 700 hundred families residing at Gautam Nagar, near the Municipal slaughterhouse at Deonar here, are surviving under unhygienic conditions.

Most of them are Safai karamcharis working in the slaughterhouse and one or two from each family are suffering from one disease or the other due to the unhygienic surroundings.

These are the findings of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK), which recently undertook a visit to the area.

''These people are working in the municipal slaughterhouse for more than 19 years as daily wagers but still neither they get assurance of permanent employment nor the basic amenities of livelihood,'' the chairperson of NCSK Santosh Chowdhary said.

Stating that the people residing in the area had been living a life worst than imaginable, Ms Chowdhary urged the state goverment to look into the plight of these families.

She also pointed out the pathetic life conditions of the safai karmacharis in the city, where on an average 500-600 die due to their unhygienic working conditions and lack of medical facilities.

''The safai karmacharies in the city have not even provided uniforms for the last 4-5 years and there is no provision for benefits like provident fund and pension'', she added.
