TN bypoll: Cong, BJP, PT candidates file papers
Madurai, June 8 (UNI) The candidates of the Congress, BJP and Puthiya Thamizhagam (PT) filed their nomination papers for the June 26 by-election to the Madurai West Assembly constituency on the last day for filing of nominations today.
Mr M K Azhagiri, son of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, was among those who accompanied the Congress nominee, K S K Rajendran. The Congress was fielding its candidate as part of the DMK-led DPA.
PT's V Chitrarasu alias Mahalingam and BJP's Seetharaman filed their papers, accompanied by their party functionaries.
The AIADMK nominee, Sellur K Raju, had filed his papers earlier.
Of the 39 candidates who had filed their papers, except those from major parties, all others were independents.
The bypoll was necessitated due to the death of rebel AIADMK Legislator S V Shanmugham on February 5.
According to the election schedule, scrutiny would be taken up on June 9 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is June 11. Counting of votes would be taken up on June 29.
