WB:Teenager attempts to end life after police inaction

Barasat, Jun 8: After being refused to have her complaint lodged in a local police station against her perpetrators, an 18-year-old girl made an abortive attempt to kill herself and landed at a hospital with severe burn injuries in North 24-Parganas, police sources said.

Latika Das, a resident of Rabindrapalli under Ashoknagar police station in North 24 Parganas, was admitted to Habra State General Hospital with severe burn injuries and later referred to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on June 4.

Police, however, registered a case yesterday and arrested two persons, including a woman, who had allegedly abducted the girl.

The two suspects, Nirmal and Anima Roy, a local couple vending in cane juice, allegedly abducted the girl and kept her hostage overnight on June 2. The girl, however, managed to flee from their clutches and went to Ashoknagar police station on June 3 to lodge a complaint. On the following day, she made a second attempt to file an FIR and was refused by the policemen there.

Encouraged by police "inaction", the couple then threatened the girl with dire consequences if she dared to call police about the abduction.

Finally, Latika Das made another attempt to get help from the police station on June 4. When she was again denied to have her complaint lodged, she returned home and took the extreme step by attempting to commit suicide, family sources said.

She was recovering from third degree burns.

Police said the couple was arrested and investigation is on to ascertain the facts.
