NFC develops PWC alloy useful for space nuclear power
Hyderabad, Jun 8 (UNI) The Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) has developed Niobium-based material, popularly known as PWC alloy, at special Material Plant for use in Compact High Temperature Reactor (CHTR) and Space Nuclear Power systems.
NFC Chief Executive R N Jayaraj told mediapersons here today the NFC undertook the development and trial melting of the alloy from the raw materials available in the house. It laid emphasis on achieving the desired chemical composition of the alloy by employing Electron Beam melting route.
The alloy has been suggested due to the significant advantage with respect to its strength. This quality was achieved primarily by solid solution and dispersion strengthening, he said.
Mr Jayaraj handed over the PWC alloy to Baba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Director S Banerjee on the occasion of NFC Day celebrations.
