Mizo child welfare group seeks justice against cruelty

Aizawl, Jun 8 (UNI) The Aizawl-based Child Welfare Committee(CWC) has demanded an appropriate punishment for a woman in Aizawl who allegedly poured boiling water on her eight-year-old and five-year-old step-children.

The CWC had filed an FIR with the Aizawl police station and was told that the police will be taking the woman identified as Lalngaihawmi into their custody for investigation.

The two children, who received serious burns on their back, were also produced before the CWC yesterday. The CWC has taken steps to hand them over to their biological mother.

The CWC has vowed to ensure that cruelty against children does not go unpunished.

The CWC has also followed up on a complaint that a 14-year-old girl had been raped by her own father. They are taking steps to rescue the girl and start proceedings against the father.

Yesterday's CWC meeting discussed eight such complaints that it had recently received and chalked out steps to rescue the victims.

CWC chairperson Mrs Lalengruali Sailo disclosed that the committee has been able to dispose 186 cases out of the total 235 complaints that they had received so far.

She added that most of the cases were relating to orphans and destitutes, while sexual abuse cases and denial of rights were also common.
