Mercury soars to 45.8 degrees celsius at Amritsar

Chandigarh, Jun 8 (UNI) Schorching heat wave lashed many areas in north-west India as the mercury further soared in the plains, touching 45.8 degrees celsius at Amritsar today.

Amritsar was the hottest place in the plains as a blistering heat wave swept the holy city with the mercury hovering six degrees celsius above normal.

Elsewhere in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Union Territory, the mercury stayed three degrees to four degrees celsius above normal.

The heat wave conditions prevailing in northern parts of Punjab and western parts of Haryana are likely to continue for the next two days, according to the Weather Office here.

People also groaned under intense heat wave at Ludhiana and Patiala with the mercury soaring to 44.2 degrees and 44.1 degrees at respective places.

A severe heat wave conditions prevailed in Haryana with Hissar continuing to be the hottest place in the state, recording the maximum temperature at 45.4 degrees and the minimum temperature at 31.8 degrees celsius.

The mercury also rose at Karnal and Ambala, respectively recording 43.6 degrees, four degrees above normal, and 43.3 degrees celsius, three degrees up.

Chandigarh and its adjoining areas were also under the impact of heat wave conditions with the mercury rising to 43.6 degrees, four degrees above normal, from 42.6 degrees recorded yesterday. Hot and dusty winds swept across the city occasiobally during the day.

The temperatures also increased in Himachal Pradesh with Una, reeling under 43.0 degrees, was the hottest place in the state.

Bhuntar in Kullu district recorded 37.2 degrees and Sundernagar in Mandi district 40.0 degrees.

The capital town of Shimla recorded a high of 29.7 degrees which was six degrees above normal.

The weather office has predicted mainly sunny days in the region with hot and strong wind in Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.
