Family jumps before train, police lathi charge protestors
Jalandhar, June 8 (UNI) The police had to open fire to control a mob that was protesting against the alleged suicide by a couple and their three year old daughter near Bir village in the district this morning.
According to police sources, Tari, a 30-year resident of Basukh Khalsa village, along with his wife Davinder and daughter Kusum allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a train near Bir village on the Jalandhar-Nakodar section.
The suicide led to protests from the residents of Basukh Khalsa village as they alleged that Tari and his family committed suicide due to harassement by the police. They claimed that the family was being harassed ever since their servant eloped with a girl of the village.
The protestors blocked the Nakodar-Noormahal road that brought the police on the scene. The police at first resorted to a mild lathi charge that further infuriated the villagers and they gheraoed the police.
According to officials, the policemen then opened fire that led to injuries to three villagers. The injured were admitted to the civil hospital at Nakodar.
Senior police officials have reached the spot and are conducting an inquiry into the whole incident, including the reasons that provoked the police to open fire.
