Family jumps before train, police fire on protestors
Jalandhar, June 8 (UNI) One person was killed and three injured when police open fired on a mob protesting against the alleged suicide by a couple and their three year old daughter near Bir village in the district this morning.
According to police sources, Tari, a 30-year resident of Basukh Khalsa village, alongwith his wife Davinder and daughter Kusum allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a train near Bir village on the Jalandhar-Nakodar section.
The suicide led to protests from the residents of Basukh Khalsa village as they alleged that Tari and his family committed suicide due to harassement by the police. They claimed that the family was being harassed ever since their servant eloped with a girl of the village.
The protestors blocked the Nakodar-Noormahal road that brought the police on the scene. The police at first resorted to a mild lathi charge that further infurated the villagers and they gheraoed the cops.
According to officials, the policemen then opened fire that led to death of one villager and injuries to three others. The deceased was identified as Balvinder Singhof Bhadurpur village. The injured were admitted to the civil hospital at Nakodar.
Senior police officials are conducting an inquiry into the whole incident, including the reasons that provoked the cops to open fire.
