Call to 'save Congress, save Punjab' given by PPCC chief
Chandigarh, June 8 (UNI) The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) has called upon the party leaders and workers to 'save Congress, save Punjab'.
The call was given by PPCC chief Shamsher Singh Dullo after District Congress Committees (DCC) brought to his notices president cases of 'political vendetta' and police atrocities against party workers.
The meeting of DCC presidents held here today was called to discuss the atrocities on Congress workers being committed by the police at the behest of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
The DCC presidents submitted to the PPCC, lists of FIRs registered in their respective districts since the SAD-BJP government took over in March this year.
Lashing out at the Punjab government for its inability to curb the deteriorating law and order situation, Mr Dullo claimed that the incidents of looting and murders had shown a rise in the state since March.
Without referring to the Sikh-Sacha Sauda controversy, the Congress leaders said that the brandishing of unsheathed swords and other weapons in the streets of Punjab had terrified the urban population and the trading community. He said that the Congress would stand by its workers and would take every possible step to save them from the vendetta politics of the state government.
Mr Dullo asked the DCC heads to hold block level meetings of Congress workers. He announced that he alongwith Congress Legislature Party leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal would undertake an extensive tour of the state from June 15 to 30 to express their solidarity with party workers.
