Ahmedabad, June 8 (UNI) The kidney department of the Civil Hospital here perfomed the first-ever cadaver kidney transplant today.

The transplant was performed on 13-year-old Maulesh, who also underwent thymus transplant from the brain dead body.

According to Hospital's Kidney Department head Dr H L Trivedi, ''Maulesh was born with urinary infections, following which he had to undergo a small operation. However, as he grew both of his kidneys weakened and finally failed.'' ''Maulesh's father died at the age of three and his mother remarried. He was brought up by his aunt and uncle, who bore the expenditure of his operation,'' said Dr Trivedi, who headed the team of surgeons to perform the operation.

Explaining the surgery, he said ''A cadaveric kidney comes from a person who has suffered brain death. All donors are carefully screened to prevent any disease transmission.'' ''The Uniform Anatomical Gift Act allows all of us to consent to organ donation for transplantation when we die and allows our families to provide such permission as well,'' he said.

''After permission for donation is granted, the kidneys are removed and stored until a recipient has been selected,'' Dr Trivedi said.

''In Maulesh's case, the cadaver donor was late Govind Mangaldas Patel, who had died of brain hemorrhage. It was the Patel family's decision to donate the kidney to Maulesh,'' he added.
