Six militants arrested in Asom as rebel group calls bandh

Guwahati, Jun 7 (UNI) As many as six rebels of different outfits were arrested in Asom today.

Karbi Anglong SP Anurag Tankha told UNI two militants of the United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) were nabbed by police at Rongthelon check gate near Diphu in the hill district this evening. A 9mm pistol and ten rounds of ammunition were seized from the rebels, who first tried to flee but were eventually nabbed by the police manning the check gate.

In another incident, two suspected rebels belonging to Manipuri outfits - Jamkhokam and Thangkho Pao - were arrested from Nagaon town in central Asom while they were on their way from Manipur to Diphu in Karbi Anglong. Twentyone live ammunition of a 303 rifle were seized from their possession.

Two other militants, belonging to the Birsa Commando Force, were apprehended by the Army at a tea garden in Tinsukia district of upper Asom last night.

Meanwhile, the militant outfit Karbi Longri North Cachar Liberation Front (KLNLF) has called a 36-hour Karbi Anglong district bandh from tomorrow in protest against the killing of two of its cadres by police on the night of June 5.

The KLNLF militants were gunned by a team of Karbi Anglong police during a combing operation at Dillai.
