Opening of Mettur Dam on Jun 12 doubtful: Minister

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, June 7 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister Duraimurugan today virtually ruled out the opening of the Mettur Dam on the customary date of June 12 for releasing water for Kuruvai cultivation.

Talking to newspersons after supervising the desilting works in the delta district, the Minister said it was doubtful if the dam could be opened for irrigation in the delta region as the South West Monsoon was not active.

He felt extremely happy when the monsoon set in on a bright note, but now, it was not encouraging.

''As of today, it is doubtful if the Mettur Dam could be opened on the customary date of June 12,'' he said.
