Mercury touches 45.2 degrees Celsius at Sirsa

Chandigarh, June 7 (UNI) North-west India reeled under blistering heat with the mercury further soaring in the region today, touching 45.2 degrees Celsius at Sirsa.

The maximum hovered three degrees above normal, making the people groan under under an intense hot weather conditions in the region. Eratic power supply and water shortage in some areas have added to the woes of the people.

Sirsa with 45.2 degrees was the hottest place in Haryana, followed by Hissar recording 44.2 degrees, Ambala 42.6 degrees and Karnal 42.5 degrees. The maximum stayed three degrees above normal at these places. Heat wave conditions are likely to develop in some parts of Haryana, according to the weather office here.

There was let up in hot weather conditions in Punjab where the mercury hovered above 43 degrees at most places. Ludhiana with 43.6 degrees, three degrees above normal, turned out to be the hottest place in the state. The holy city of Amritsar registered 43.4 degrees and Patiala 43.1 degrees, two degrees up.

Chandigarh and its adjoining areas in Punjab and Haryana were also under the impact of scorching sun with the mercury further rising in the city recording 42.6 degrees, three degrees above normal. Hot dusty winds swept the city occasionally during the day.

The temperatures also increased in Himachal Pradesh. Una, reeling under 42.0 degrees, was the hottest place in the state, while Bhuntar in Kullu district recorded 36.0 degrees and Sundernagar in Mandi district 38.9 degrees. The capital town of Shimla recorded a high of 28.1 degrees which was four degrees above normal, The weather office has predicted mainly sunny days in the region with hot and strong winds in Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.
