KoPT registers record container handling in May

Kolkata, Jun 7 (UNI) The Kolkata Dock System(KDS) of Kolkata Port Trust(KoPT) registered highest-ever container handling record in May.

A KoPT release said that ''KDS handled 25,913 twenty feet equivalent units (TEUs) in the month of May as against 18,867 TEUs handled during the same period last year.'' The dock also registered the highest growth among all the major ports of the country with a rise of 37.34 per cent in container traffic during the period under review, it said.

The release said the average growth in KDS was 21 per cent during two months of the current fiscal as compared to 2006-07.

During May, KDS handled 46 container feeder vessels -- the highest in its history. Commodities attributing KDS's performance include electronic goods, chemicals, machinery and spare parts, metal ingots, polythene granules, leather goods, jute and jute-products machinery and spares, tea and cotton.
