Mumbai, June 7 (UNI) Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) president Jai Prakash Chhajed today said it will oppose the special economic zones (SEZs) in the country, if the farmers interests are not taken care of.

Addressing a news conference here, Mr Chhajed said ''The government should not help the industrialists to acquire farmers' land for setting up of SEZs and it should be done only with the farmers consent.'' He said the farmers should be made partners and should be given shares in the profits and their heirs should be given jobs, if they give their land for setting up of SEZs.

When asked why the government is helping the industrialists to acquire farm land, Mr Chhajed said the government is helping the industrialists by allowing them to acquire barren land and not the productive ones.

He said the INTUC will organise a workers meeting on June 16 here, where the union will demand for a share in SEZs for the farmers.

The state government has given the go ahead to eight SEZs in Maharashtra, Mr Chhajed said, adding that despite being a post holder in Congress, he would oppose the move if the farmers are not benefited.

In the meeting on June 16, INTUC will stress on the issues pertaining to the farmers and will demand the same from the Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Baba Siddiqui and Environment Minister Ganesh Naik, he said and added that he would not allow another Nandigram in Maharashtra.
