Heatwave claims eight lives in UP

New Delhi, June 7 (UNI) The ongoing heatwave in Uttar Pradesh claimed eight more lives in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 48, whereas rain related incidents claimed five and two lives respectively in Bijapur district of Karnataka and Gujarat.

Intense heat wave killed two people in Chandauli and one each in Lucknow, Unnao, Barabanki, Jhansi, Banda and Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, as above normal temperatures were recorded in Varanasi, Lucknow, Allahabad and, Agra divisions in the last 24 hours. Banda was the hottest at 44.8 degrees Celsius, for the second consecutive day today. The weatherman forecast no respite in the coming days.

In Karnataka three people were charred to death in a lightning strike near Talikot. While one person died on the spot when lightning struck him near Muddebihal, a woman was killed when the roof of a house collapsed on her at Ganesha village in Bijapur district.

Heavy downpour continued in the district and water entered houses in the low-lying areas.

Two people were killed and one was injured in rain related incidents in Saurashtra region of Gujarat. A farmer was killed due to lightning at Amrapar village of Jasdan taluka of the district last evening as moderate to heavy showers, accompanied with high velocity winds lashed parts of the region in the past 24 hours.

In another incident, a teenaged boy was killed and another one injured in a wall collapse in Bela village in Morbi taluka, while two poultry farms were destroyed in the cyclonic winds that lashed Samadhiyala village in Wankaner taluka of the district. Parts of Morbi, Surendranagar, Porbandar and Jasdan received moderate showers.

The onset of monsoon in the North East region of the country may be delayed for the next 72 hours due to interruption of cyclonic movement in Arabian Sea.

According to the report of National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, the cyclonic movement over Bay of Bengal may be further delayed and is expected to hit the region by June 10.

In the eastern part of the country, Bihar today continued to witness another hot and sultry day with mercury hovering around 37 degrees, with humidity of 57 per cent which forced people to remain indoors.

The North-west India reeled under blistering heat with the mercury further soaring in the region. The maximum temperature hovered three degrees above normal Sirsa with 45.2 degrees was the hottest place in Haryana, followed by Hissar at 44.2 degrees, Ambala 42.6 degrees and Karnal 42.5 degrees.

There was let up in hot weather conditions in Punjab where the mercury hovered above 43 degrees at most places. Chandigarh and its adjoining areas in Punjab and Haryana were also under the impact of scorching sun as hot dusty winds swept the city occasionally during the day.

Una was the hottest place in Himachal Pradesh with 42.0 degrees, while Bhuntar in Kullu district recorded 36.0 degrees and Sundernagar in Mandi district 38.9 degrees and Shimla recorded a high of 28.1 degrees which was four degrees above normal, The weather office has predicted mainly sunny days in the region with hot and strong winds in Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.

Rajasthan is again in the grip of sizzling heat with one BSF jawan during of heat stroke in Ganganagar district, which recorced the highest temperature of 44.5 degree today.

As northwesterly surface winds continued to maintain strong influence over Northwest India, the national capital experienced another sweltering day with the mercury soaring to 42.5 degrees with no hope of getting any respite from the scorching heat, the delhites are expected to suffer from not and dry conditions at least for three more days.

The Met department has also forecast mainly clear sky and possibility of duststorm during the next 24 hours.

Conditions are favourable for advancement of south-west monsoon to Andhra Pradesh with weather prediction models suggesting reorganisation and strengthening of monsoon over Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during the next two to three days.

Rain occurred at most places over Rayalaseema and at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana during the last 24 hours, the weather office said today.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers were likely to occur at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rayalaseema during the next 48 hours.

Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places in south Konkan, Goa, south Madhya Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

The rain or thundershowers are also likely to occur at a few places in Arunachal Pradesh, Asom, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, north Konkan, north Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar and at some isolated places in Jharkhand, Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Gujarat.

Heat wave conditions prevailed in some parts of Chhatttisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh and at some isolated places in Jharkhand and Vidarbha. Hot day conditions also prevailed at isolated places in coastal Karnataka.

In the regions where the southwest monsoon is yet to set in, day temperatures were markedly above in some parts of Madhya Maharashtra and were appreciably above normal in some parts of Asom, Meghalaya, east Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Goa, Telangana, south interior Karnataka and Kerala.

They were above normal in some parts of Saurashtra, Kutch and Tamil Nadu and in remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh. They were normal over the rest of the regions.

Rain or thundershowers had also occurred at a few places in Arunachal Pradesh, Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, interior Karnataka, at isolated places in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Orissa, Bihar, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Dry weather prevailed over Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.
