GIIP launches PG diploma course in Patents and IP

New Delhi, June 7 (UNI) To cater to the increasing demand of patent know-how and intellectual property, Global Institute of Intellectual Property (GIIP) today launched a postgraduate diploma course in 'Patents and Intellectual Property Services'.

The session for GIIP's full-time nine-month PG diploma will commence from August this year, with a course fee of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Designed for graduates and postgraduates in engineering, bio-technology, pharma and legal professionals with technical background, the course will prepare students for careers in patent drafting, prosecution and IP.

''The Legal and Intellectual property services industry in India is expected to account for a significant portion of the growth in outsourcing business. Driven by the increasing demand in the US and Europe, the legal and IP outsourcing business is poised to grow in the country, '' said GIIP President Atulya Nath.

Some of the best IP practioners and experts trained in the US will conduct the courses, he said.

''We want to develop professionals in India to serve global customers in the field of IP and patents and establish a new career stream for a large number of high quality technical and legal professionals,'' GIIP Chairman and Mentor Kailash Joshi told reporters here.

The organisation has infused Rs five to six crore in the first phase of the course and plans to introduce some short term courses in October, he said.

The course will offer 45 seats and consists of prior art searches, patent claims drafting, patent portfolio management, patent prosecution, valuation of IP and licencing.

The GIIP team will consist of IP practitioners, entrepreneurs, US Attorneys and technical trainers.

The curriculum has been developed by United States Patents and Trade-mark Office (USPTO) Ex-Examiner Steve Shear.

Recently, GIIP in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) completed a six-week certificate course on patents and intellectual property services.

GIIP will begin the courses from its Delhi centre and then gradually move on to cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Mumbai and will foray in international market too.

The institute will be accredited by Indian and international standards within a timeframe of 18 months.
