Customs stop to emancipate women in NE: NCW member
Itanagar, June 7 (UNI) Age-old customary laws prevalent in most of the North Eastern states are an impediment in liberalising conditions for there women, according to National Council for Women (NCW) member and Arunachal Pradesh in-charge Neeva Konwar.
Addressing a two-day seminar on 'Land and Resources Rights of Indigenous Women in NE' here today, Ms Konwar advocated a solution within these customary laws for empowering women to have their rights in all aspects.
''The NE women will have to fight for their rights on land and other resources and for this they have to change the mindset of the people'', she commented and called for creating awareness among the rural women on their rights granted by the constitution.
Stating that women emancipation through education need to be brought in the region, the NCW member stressed on increasing the literacy rate of women and further appealed the NGOs to work in this direction.
Pleading the respective state governments to implement the Property Inheritance Act, 1925 in the right perspective, Ms Konwar suggested for periodic review of all the Acts concerning women by state women commissions for their better implementation.
''Women should not only go for political and economic empowerment but should participate in all policy making decisions so as to get their due recognition'', she added.
