Lucknow, Jun 7 (UNI) A local court in Azamgarh today lauded Padam Singh, the present chief security officer of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, for bravely confronting a band of dacoits aboard Kaifiat Express.

Awarding 10 years rigorous imprisonment to all the accused in the September 30, 2003 case, the court praised Mr Singh and his aide Hari Prasad Samar for their bravery.

Mr Singh is also the recipient of a police medal from the President in 2004.

''Passengers are faced with danger as robbery aboard trains has become order of the day. There are only few people like Mr Singh, who have the courage to come forward for public security,'' the court said.

On September 30, despite being shot at by the miscreants, Mr Singh, who was then DSP, along with sub inspector Samar had foiled the efforts of the marauders. They had also gunned down one member of the gang.
