TN: AIADMK legislator set ablaze inspector

Chennai, June 7: In a bizarre incident, an Opposition AIADMK MLA and his supporters set ablaze a police inspector at Thiruchitrambalam Koot Road near Kottakuppam in Villuppuram district of Tamil Nadu today.

A top police official told sources here that the incident occurred when Legislator Ganapathy, representing Vanur in the State Assembly, was burning an effigy of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi as part of an agitation. And as Inspector Jawahar attempted to put out the blaze, Mr Ganapathy and his supporters doused the Inspector with petrol and set him ablaze.

Both the legs of the Inspector were completely burnt. He was rushed to the JIPMER Hospital in Puducherry, where his condition was stated to be critical.

About 50 people, including Mr Ganapathy, were arrested.

Police registered cases under various sections of the IPC, including 307.
