'Urdu was pure and native language of India'

Bangalore, Jun 6: Stating that the Urdu language was born and developed in India, Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi today called for removing certain misgivings surrounding the language, including that it belongs to particular community or religion.

Speaking after inaugurating the sixth All India Conference of State Urdu Academies, organised jointly by National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language and Karnataka Urdu Academy, here he said that the Urdu language, hailed as one of the few sweet languages of the world, actually belongs to India and has rich academic value as any other languages in the country.

He said that despite widely spoken by large section of the people across the country there exists certain misconceptions like it belongs to particular religion and community. The Governor urged the experts to take steps to remove such misgivings.

Stating that Urdu as a media had played a significant role in the struggle for freedom of the country, he said that it was part and parcel of fight for independence.

Referring to the demand made by the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language to allot land for setting up its National Coordination Center, Mr Chaturvedi promised to take up the matter with the Chief Minister.

He also promised to prevail upon the state government to allocate more funds for the Karnataka Urdu Academy which did not have its own premises.

Dr Ali Javed, Director National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, who also spoke on the occasion, said that Urdu language was associated with the pride and culture of the nation and expressed regret that it had not accorded the deserved place of honor despite being spoken by large section of the population across the length and breadth of the country. Urdu was born and developed in India and people belonging to all sections of the society have contributed for its growth.

He said that the the Conference has been convened to discuss and chalk out programme to promote and strengthen Urdu as a language across the country. Sixteen state heads of respective Urdu Academies including from Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, West Bengal, Punjab, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh besides Karnataka are participating in the two day conference.

Dr Ali Javed said that it was proposed to establish a Centre of the National Council in South and appealed to the Karnataka Government to provide land for the same.

On the occasion eight publications of NCPUL, Karnataka Urdu Academy and Haryana Urdu Academy including Kulliyate-e-Mus-hafi Vol VIII, Fikro-o-Tahqucq brought out by NCPUL were released. Haryana Urdu Academy has published urdu book 'Tujhe Hum Wali Samajthe'.
