Shillong, Jun 06 (UNI) A four-day night road blockade by Khasi Students Union (KSU) to protest against the proposed June 12 public hearing on uranium mining issue in Meghalaya began here today.

KSU has threatened to intensify their agitation till the hearing was called off.

The KSU had alleged that both the Centre and state are 'hell-bent' on Uranium mining and that the proposed public hearing at Nongbah Jyrin in West Khasi Hills on June 12 was a first step to facilitate mining in the area.

KSU General Secretary Hamlet Dohling had warned that if the state government failed to cancel the public hearing it would launch fresh wave of agitations.

''We are opposing the uranium mining due to environmental hazards posed by it and if the government does not pay any heed to our demand we will have to intensify our agitation'', he added.

The two-day office picketing ended yesterday peacefully.

However, most of the Central government offices and banks remained closed during the picketing hours and attendance in the state government offices was very thin.

Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills District administration have taken adequate security measures to prevent any untowards incident in view of the KSU's four-day night road blockade from today.
