Kidnapped tribal woman rescued
Itanagar, June 6 (UNI) The kidnapped tribal woman-Bapinglu Hrisikro and her two children have been rescued following assistance from state Finance Minister Kalikho Pul.
The trio were allegedly kidnapped by Bapinglu's previous in-laws on May 28. They were rescued yesterday in Lohit district, ten days after the incident.
Sources informed that it was customary among the tribals to kidnap widows if they re-marry. The clan members of Bapinglu's present and late husband would hold a meeting to reach a solution.
Mr Pul informed that the mother and her children have been kept in Anjaw district deputy commissioner's residence under police protection.
Meanwhile, five arrested in connection to this case had been produced before the court on Monday last. ''The court has asked to keep the miscreants in police remand for five days,'' Lohit superintendent of police C P Mansai informed.
''Committing crime in the name of customary laws is against humanity and uncalled for in a civilised society,'' said Human Rights Law Network Arunachal Chapter(HRLNA) coordinator Sunil Mow and Arunachal Citizens' Rights (ACR) president Bamang Anthony.
Bapinglu, who became a widow at a young age in 1993, was left to fend for herself with two minor children. She was reportedly freed from the bondage of marriage by a court order paving way for her marriage to a man belonging to another clan.
