Aizawl, June 06: In a bid to boost the tourism industry in Mizoram, the Inner Line Regulation (ILR), considered by many as the main hurdle on the path of tourism development in the state, may be done away with.

''The state government is taking steps to lift the Restrict Area Permit (RAP) and Inner Line Permit (ILP) to boost tourism industry in Mizoram,'' Tourism Secretary Vanlalhuma said here today at the inauguration of the Serow Tours, a commercial tour operator.

''A meeting between officials of the Centre and the state will be held on June 8 at New Delhi where the lifting of the RAP/ILP will be finalised,'' Tourism Director B Sanghluna said.

Despite its scenic beauties and tranquility, Mizoram was unable to attract large number of tourists mainly due to the necessity of obtaining RAP for foreigners and ILP for indigenous people, official sources said adding that the removal of the ILR had been discussed at the NEC sectoral meeting on tourism and hospitality at Gangtok during April 27-28.

Besides, the ILRs prevented investment from both Indian and foreign companies, officials said.

Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh were the two other states where ILRs were mandatory.

Serow Tours Director B.Lalhruaitluangi underlined that though Mizoram lacked great ancient heritages compared to other states, its natural beauties and the unique cultural hospitality of Mizos could be a great tourist attraction.

The development of the tourism industry would also boost the state's economy as a whole, Ms Lalhruaitluangi added.
