Port Blair, June 6 (UNI) The Indian Coast Guard(ICG), Air arm, here has added one more helicopter to its Air Squadron, to enhance Rescue at Sea(RAS) capabilities of Coast Guard in this archipelago.

Commandant S N M Pattanaik, the Public Relation Officer of Coast Guard in Andaman told UNI today that the trial of the helicopter were made today from INS Utkrosh, the Naval Airbase at Port Blair.

Earlier, the ICG had intensified its Anti Poaching Operations to curb the menace of foreign poachers in these remote archipelago, Mr Pattanaik said.

In October 2006 in such operations, Coast Guard helicopter single handedly, apprehended one Myanmarese Dinghy along with 12 poachers at Tuft Island.

The Coast Commandant added that addition of helicopter would boost the operational reach of Coast Guard in anti poaching and SAR Operations.

Andaman and Nicobar islands have 572 small and big islands out of which only 36 are inhabited. Most of the islands in North Andaman were raided by poachers, from neighboring countries.

CG Air Squadron at Port Blair is equipped with two Dornier fixed wing aircraft and two Chetak helicopters, Mr Pattanaik added.
